K6AA Field Day 2002

K6AA_Field_Day_2002 These are some pictures of our K6AA 2002 Field Day site. The guy soldering the cables with his able assistant is Jim, KQ6EA. The able assistant is my son Filip, KF6WVV. Murphy struck us hard this year, mostly because of my work schedule. Some stuff didn't get done until the last minute, and some didn't get done until we were at the site. The 2.4GHz AO-40 dish blew down Saturday morning, breaking the feed off the support arm. A judicious application of wood strips and cable ties enabled us to get it going again, and we were at least able to copy the AO-40 Middle Beacon at S9+.
Just wait till NEXT year!

Here's a wider angle picture showing the dish before it blew down, and our beautiful coastal location. Beautiful, that is, until the wind comes up! We're located on a high bluff above the Pacific Ocean, on the Upper Reservation of Fort MacArthur in San Pedro, California. The wind comes blasting up the bluff starting about 14:00 local time, and if you don't have it tied down, it'll wind up in the harbor!

This is a view looking up towards the hilltop, where the 20M phone, Weak Signal, Satellite (yeah, right!), APRS Node, and Microwave stations were located.

Here's our 10GHz microwave link operated by Glen, KE6HPZ. Glen was also active on 2M SSB, 3456MHz, made our solar-powered contacts, and ran the APRS Node! Thanks for all the work and the bonus points! He actually did better than our satellite station did!
